5-HTP

What is 5-HTP:

    The amino-acid L-5 Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), is said to improve our levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in regulating sleep, appetite, mood, cardiovascular function, and immune activity.  This modified amino acid (the immediate precursor to serotonin) is considered 10 times more effective for increasing serotonin levels in the brain than tryptophan.

L-Tryptophan ------------------------------>  5 HTP   ----------------------------------->  Serotonin

Benefits of 5-HTP:

  • Depression

    • Administration seemed most successful on patients with persistent disorders of serotonin metabolism.

  • Insomnia

    • Clinically shown to increase the REM ("dream sleep") and deep sleep while not increasing total sleep time.

  • Obesity

Serotonin deficiency symptoms:

  • Sleeplessness

  • Food cravings

  • Mood changes

Suggested Dosage:

   Take 1-2 capsules, 1-3 times daily between meals, or as advised by your health care professional.  Initial dosage can be 50 mg three times a day on an empty stomach.  If this dosage does not seem adequate it may be increased to 100 mg three times a day.

Cautions:

   If you are currently taking any SSRIs such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft or any other antidepressant, please consult your health care professional.   Also, if you are pregnant or nursing you may need to keep additional advice from you health provider.
