Dong Quai

  • Origin

Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) is a plant found growing in the riverbanks, meadows, and deep mountain ravines in China. It has been used for female health for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. For this reason, it is often referred to as "female ginseng."

To find quality Dong Quai it must be either Chinese or Japanese Angelica, and it must be a standardized product (9000 ppm Ligustilide).

  • Provides hormonal balance and nutritional support

Dong Quai is used to balance hormones in women. Phytoestrogens are plant components that are similar to estrogen, which help females who are producing too little (menopause), or too much (some cases of breast conditions or PMS). The phytoestrogens bind weakly to normal estrogen in the body. When the body is producing high amounts of estrogen, it is thought that Dong Quai will compete for the receptor sites, causing a lower estrogen effect. If the body is not producing enough estrogen, it is thought that the phytoestrogens will cause a higher estrogen effect.

Don Quai is also used to relax muscles and relieve pain for cramps, headaches, and mood swings associated with PMS.

  • Suggested dose

Take 200 mg. standardized to 9000 ppm ligustilide 3 times daily.

  • Is it safe?

Dong Quai can cause sun sensitivity, yet it has low toxicity. It is not recommended for those who have stomach or intestinal ulcers.
