• About the Product:
  • Cascara Sagrada is a plant common to the Northwest area of the United States, and is most commonly used as a laxative. It's name means "sacred bark" in Spanish because of its use by early Spanish settlers in the region. Later, Native Americans would use cascara sagrada, and eventually early pioneering settlers moving west would adopt it. Today it is widely regarded as one of the most popularly recommended cathartics available.

• Constipation:
  • The term is used to describe the situation when defecation becomes infrequent and/or very painful. Normally, this can be cured by the addition of simple changes in diet, as well as getting proper sleep and exercise.

• Types of Purgatives:
  • Laxatives are divided into three main categories: bulk purgatives, lubricant purgatives, and stimulant purgatives; cascara sagrada is member of the last category. It works by having a stimulant effect on the intestinal wall. More specifically, the active components in cascara sagrada work by being absorbed by the intestines, which "induce" bowel movement. It's maximum effect in most people takes place approximately 8-10 hours after administering the dosage. Another beneficial use of cascara sagrada is for people with hemorrhoids or fissures, where the product helps to produce a softer stool, which is easier to pass.

• Recommended Use:
  • 50mg capsules, standardized to 25% hydorxyanthracene derivatives, take 1-2 capsules as needed. Children and elderly people should take about half that dosage.

• Safety:
  • Toxicity and side effects are rare when taken as recommended, although as with any laxative, electrolyte loss could result from long term use. Cascara sagrada however should not be taken during pregnancy.
