- Ginkgo biloba extract, a dietary supplement, is made from the leaves of the Ginkgo
biloba tree. The Ginkgo Biloba tree has flourished for a long time it's one of the world's
oldest living tree species, believed to have survived 200 million years. Ginkgo biloba
trees can be traced to the fossils of the Permian period and for this reason it is often
referred to as the " living fossil.'' Its survival over time has been attributed to
its peculiar resistance to insects, pollution and disease. In the late seventeenth
century, Engelbert Kaempfer, a German physician and botanist, has become known as the
first European to discover and catalog the ginkgo tree. It was estimated that in 1784 a
ginkgo tree was brought to America and planted, in the garden of William Hamilton, near
Philadelphia. This ginkgo tree is now planted throughout much of the United States as an
ornamental tree. Ginkgo biloba trees can live for 1000 years and may grow to a height of
100 to 122 feet and a diameter of three to four feet. The ginkgo has short horizontal
branches with short shoots bearing fan-shaped leaves that measure five to ten centimeters
across. Chinese monks so revered the Ginkgo Biloba tree that they cultivated it in their
temple gardens.

- Ginkgo biloba has been used in Oriental Medicine for more than five thousand years -
traditionally physicians prescribed it for relieving the symptoms of asthma, bronchial
coughs and chilblains. Ginkgo is also an antioxidant, which means that it fights-free
radicals. Every day, free-radicals work to break down your cells and tissues. This leads
to degenerative health conditions, which are associated with the acceleration of the
normal aging process. By fighting free- radicals Ginkgo biloba helps keep your cells and
tissues healthy, especially those in the brain which are extremely susceptible to
free-radical damage. It is one of the most well researched herbs on earth. Hundreds of
studies have been performed with Ginkgo Biloba extracts which have confirmed many of the
ancient uses as well as finding new applications. Most of the research is being done in
France and other European nations where it is considered a prescription medicine. in both
France and Germany, Ginkgo leaf extracts are among the leading prescription medicines,
where they account for 1.5 and 1.0 percent, respectively, of total prescription sales.

network of blood vessels that delivers blood and oxygen to the entire body including organ
systems. It helps prevent blood clots and has been used quite successfully for problems
relating to poor circulation, such as phlebitis (inflammation of a vein) and diabetic
peripheral vascular disease and even impotence. Uses for Ginkgo are more varied - it is
often prescribed for the improvement of peripheral circulation, so may be of immense
benefit to people suffering from pains in the legs during exercise, stiffness in the
shoulders and extreme coldness in the hands and feet. Ginkgo Biloba may also relieve the
