Ginkgo biloba trees can be traced to the fossils of the Permian period and for this reason it is often referred to as the " living fossil.'' Its survival over time has been attributed to its peculiar resistance to insects, pollution and disease. In the late seventeenth century, Engelbert Kaempfer, a German physician and botanist, has become known as the first European to discover and catalog the ginkgo tree. It was estimated that in 1784 a ginkgo tree was brought to America and planted, in the garden of William Hamilton, near Philadelphia. This ginkgo tree is now planted throughout much of the United States as an ornamental tree. Ginkgo biloba trees can live for 1000 years and may grow to a height of 100 to 122 feet and a diameter of three to four feet. The ginkgo has short horizontal branches with short shoots bearing fan-shaped leaves that measure five to ten centimeters across. Chinese monks so revered the Ginkgo Biloba tree that they cultivated it in their temple gardens.
