Feverfew

(Tanacetum parthenium)

Origin

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is an herbal perennial that produces white daisy-like flowers similar to chrysanthemums. It is common in gardens throughout the United States and Europe, and can sometimes also be found along roadsides.

Parthenolides are the most active ingredients in feverfew. Choose only feverfew that has been chemically analyzed for its parthenolide content.

Benefits and Case Study

Feverfew has been used for relief and prevention of migraine headaches, arthritis, and fever. A study had been taken from a group of volunteers who had been taking feverfew for their migraines. Part of the group took placebo (a sugarpill without feverfew) in place of their feverfew supplements. They reported increased frequency and severity in their symptoms. The rest of the group still taking feverfew had no change in their condition.

Feverfew works similarly to other anti-inflammatory agents, like aspirin, to reduce inflammation. However, because feverfew works in the early stage of the inflammation process, it is more like the steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, like cortisone. Feverfew prevents the body from producing substances that cause inflammation of blood platelet aggregation and can ease rheumatoid arthritis.

What is the suggested use?

One 250 mg. capsule, standardized to 0.2% partenolides, should be taken daily. It should be taken several months in order to treat migraines. Occasionally break from using by gradually declining dosage; skip days between dosages until finally stopping intake altogether.

Is it safe?

Feverfew is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women. It is also not recommended for children under two years of age. Occasionally minor side effects have been noted: mouth and tongue ulceration (especially those actually chewing the leaves), and gastrointestinal upset. No conflicts with conventional drugs are known.
